Figureheads
a wall sculpture by Bruce Krebs.








As its name indicates, the figurehead is located at the before a ship.

I am inspired by the "Filles du Roi" (the King's daughters) were sent in "Nouvelle-France. They were leaving for marry there. They had to do many children to populate territories. (The seamen song "Les filles de La Rochelle" is linked to this story.)







I did not wanted create this sculpture for a sailboat. The "girl" in the center presents comp image. As a project. Two other girls accompany her, pleased. One of them carries a bag on her back.
They were leaving all for never come back. To encourage them, the King of France endowed them.

(Top view) Behind the central character, rowers take them a dozen women towards the transatlantic ship. Four rowers and a pilot in rough seas.
If one observes well, one can discover many other details. A woman on horseback, a group of women who sing. Some lancers...
(I like well the old posters of cinema, in which we could see several characters, of different sizes, mixed. Some exuberant and narrative images.)
